RE/GARDER MARTAINVILLE

with Nina Medioni

Public: Janitors, residents and shopkeepers of the Marin Le Pigny complex (Martainville district, Rouen), young people from the Mission Locale Rouen Agglomération.

Location: Marin Le Pigny apartment complex: 621 apartments in 11 buildings, built from 1962 and managed by the landlord 3F Normanvie.

Time frame: 30 hours of workshops with the public.

Accompanied by the Centre photographique, the janitors of the apartment building, the employees of 3F Normanvie and a few young adults from the Mission locale, Nina Medioni invited herself into the homes of the residents of the Marin Le Pigny apartment building to collect images, stories and memories and to paint portraits of its residents in order to collectively write the history of the Martainville neighbourhood. Nina Medioni quickly integrated into the neighbourhood and, with the help of shopkeepers and residents, interviewed more than forty people in the market, in cafés and even in their own homes in the privacy of their living rooms. In addition to this body of work, there are numerous images from the past: amateur photographs, press clippings and archive images from Rouen libraries.

From these piles of newspapers and images, hours of recordings and full days of walking around the neighbourhood with her camera on her shoulder, Nina Medioni has made and edited a short, sensitive and vernacular documentary film that paints an almost exhaustive portrait of the Martainville neighbourhood and its Marin Le Pigny apartment building.

Restitution: An evening event organised in a local café invites the caretakers, residents and shopkeepers of the Marin Le Pigny complex to discover the short film produced by Nina Medioni and the young people of the local Mission, preceded by an archive film on the history of the neighbourhood and followed by a discussion on the future renovations of the building complex.
