LECTURE The photographers of the Réalités
by ANNE DE MONDENARD, curator, doctor of art history, Carnavalet Museum and MICHEL GUERRIN, editor in chief, Le Monde.
Saturday June 3rd, 6pm
With a million monthly readers, Réalités was one of the most influential news magazines of the 1950s and 1960s. Positioned at the top end of the market and on the center-right politically, it combined long and thorough investigations around the world with bold photographic reports by such renowned photographers as Edouard Boubat, Jean-Philippe Charbonnier, Frank Horvat and many others.
This conference aims to identify the editorial ambitions of Réalités and the importance of photography in its success.
Michel Guerrin and Anne de Mondenard are co-authors of the book Réalités, un mensuel français illustré (1946-1978), Actes Sud, 2008.
Anne de Mondenard is Chief Curator of Heritage, responsible for the Photographs and Digital Images Department at the Carnavalet Museum – History of Paris. She previously worked at the Ministry of Culture as a collection supervisor and also carried out consulting missions. She has a PhD in art history and is the author of a large number of books and articles on photography. She has curated numerous exhibitions.
Michel Guerrin is editor-in-chief of Le Monde, where he writes a weekly column on cultural politics. He was successively in charge of the photography section, head of the culture department, director of the Culture & Ideas supplement, deputy editorial director, and co-head of the Le Monde festival.
