Are artificial intelligence and photography complementary fields of creation or completely at odds with each other? Mathieu Bernard-Reymond is exploring the relationship between these two fields by developing an innovative camera incorporating an AI capable of modifying images according to the data and words collected at the time of shooting. The object, its design, its technology and the images it produces suggest that AI should not be thought of as a purely dematerialised technology, but, on the contrary, as already inscribed in the concrete history of photographic technique and creation. In a discussion with Pauline Martin, they will examine the artistic, technical and historical implications of this device, which will be presented in an exhibition at the Swiss Camera Museum in 2026. This dialogue will offer a broader perspective on the impact of AI on photographic creation.

Pauline Martin holds a doctorate in art history and is director of the Swiss Camera Museum (Vevey), having previously been curator in charge of exhibitions at Photo Elysée (Lausanne). Her publications include Flou Une histoire photographique(Delpire & Co, Photo Elysée, 2023), Le flou et la photographie Histoire d’une rencontre (1676-1985)(PUR, 2023), L’Évidence, le vide, la vie La photographie face à ses lacunes (Ithaque, 2017) and L’Œil photographique de Daniel Arasse Théories et pratiques d’un regard (Fage éditions, 2012). She has also curated a number of exhibitions, including ‘Edward Kaprov: War on Glass’ (2024) and ‘ re^Generation4 The challenges facing photography and its museum in the future’ (2020) and ’Anonymats d’aujourd’hui. A short photographic grammar of urban life’ (2016).
