A little over a year ago, we discovered that we were – the term is now hackneyed – “confined”. Since then, we have lived the paradox of a collective experience of isolation: each one at home, all of us in trouble. With the disappearance of friendly handshakes and hugs, the range of our sensory spectrum has suddenly shrunk to an unprecedented extent. Touch, the sense through which the sensitive world emerges, manifests itself in a double movement: the child who is about to touch will simultaneously experience proximity to the desired subject or object and the distance that separates it.
How to make an image of touch? In its flat surface, would not the image be, against all odds, the most capable of encapsulating this paradoxical nature?
The exhibition À Fleur de monde brings together thirteen artists who have approached touch, embracing it or brushing against it, through photography, video and moulding. They have staged the sense through which we experience being-there-with: touch as a means of learning about ourselves, about others, about our presence in the world.
